Japamala

A japamala is a string of prayer beads used to aid meditation. They are used for keeping count while reciting, chanting, or mentally repeating a mantra.

A japamala contains 108 beads plus a guru bead which is often larger and more ornate than the others. Counting begins with a bead next to the guru bead and allows the meditator to focus on the mantra rather than keeping count.

I was honoured to be commissioned by Laurent Roure (yogalaurent.com) to make a japamala for his private meditation practice. Laurent is a senior Hatha yoga, pranayama, breathwork and meditation teacher and has been practising and teaching different facets of yoga for over 25 years.

I found his pranayama, breathwork and meditation classes extremely helpful when the country went into lockdown.

Laurent’s japamala was made of golden pietersite beads, oxidised silver and silk. Over time the oxidised silver will be worn away to reveal the textured surface of the guru bead.

Do get in touch via the contact form if you are interested in commissioning your own piece.
